Andrew D. Perkins MS, CIH, CSP, COHC

Welcome to the site. Hope this helps you learn a little more about me.

Introduction

I grew up in a small rural western Kentucky community. My collegiate background is unique; a BS in Computer Information Systems and a MS in Occupational Safety and Health from Murray State University. These have proved valuable in my professional development. To continuously improve, I have obtained the professional credentials of CIH, CSP, CD and COHC.

The first professional safety and health (S&H) work I was responsible for was during college working at Briggs and Stratton Company in Murray, KY from 1999 to 2004. Upon graduation, my IH career path took me to Vulcan Materials Company's Corporate Safety, Health and Environmental Department in Birmingham, AL from 2004 to 2013. In 2013 I chose to take an outstanding opportunity as Senior Corporate Industrial Hygienist with Alabama Power Company, a Southern Company. In my current role, I provide IH services to electrical generation, transmission, distribution and various other supporting groups. Some of my primary focus areas are hearing conservation, exposure assessment strategies, S&H electronic data management systems, silica, mineral fibers, welding fumes, and government regulations.

Volunteering within the S&H profession is something that I greatly enjoy. I have been elected to various positions such as Secretary, Treasurer, President/Elect, and had the privilege of serving as the 2014 Alabama Local AIHA Section President. My volunteer work includes the Southeast Mine S&H Conference, BCSP/AIHA/ABIH Mentor, AIHA's Exposure Assessment Strategies Committee, ASSE member, and speaking engagements at AIHce and Universities.

Two of my top long-term goals are: (1) to create improved methods to build interest with high school/early college students to pursue Occupational S&H as a career and, (2) to develop simplified electronic IH data management systems with automated exposure assessment assistance tools integrated.

Unrelated to my professional work, my family and I are in the process of a massive DIY home renovation project on a 1926 Craftsman Bungalow. I enjoy traveling and learning something new.
